v I read about Standard Operation Procedure (SOP) of Flir Asia Sdn Bhd. From here I can imagine how the teams do their work every day at TNB’s substations.

v Chapter 1: Job initiation

· The Scanning Job is initiated when a purchased ordered (PO) is received from the client.

· Every purchased order(PO) must clearly state the following basic information:

i. The PO reference number.

ii. The date of PO is issued.

iii. The territory to be scanned.

iv. The Value of the Job.

v. The name of officer in charge, representing the client.

Day 17 (27th April 2010)

v Report formatting for TNB Distribution (Shah Alam) and TNB Distribution Kuala Lumpur.

v Read Standard Operation Procedure (SOP)

v Chapter 2: Scanning Operation (General Work)

v Discussed about general scope of work besides infrared and ultrasonic scanning.

v Safety Gears: Safety gears is required to enter substation, to prevent an accident during scanning operation are:

WeeK 3 (19th~23rd April 2010)

Day 11(19th April 2010 - Monday)

After 2 week training in Flir Asia, I feel more comfortable with the surrounding and also well known all the staffs here. To day the technician here explained to me about TNB substation as i mention in my previous post which are PMU, PPU and also the P/E. The flow of the current or the connection of this 3 substations are as below:

Beside, I do some research and read more about Ultrasonic scanning. Substation Ultrasonic Scanning Inspection is performed to Compliment the main Infrared Scanning Inspection. Usually, Ultrasonic Scanning Inspection can detect Partial Discharge Phenomena.

WeeK 2 (12th~16th April 2010)

Day 7 (12th April 2010)
  • Download Infrared pictures, Photos and Ultrasonic graph from flirimage server for report formatting.
  • I need to do report formatting for Mr.Rehanfairuz (Team Leader) team.
Client: TNB Distribution KL Pusat
Date of Inspection: 9th April 2010
No. of Reports: 11 (for each Pencawang Elektrik)
  • From last week assignment, my supervisor (Mr.Khairil Fitri) recommend me to read Bangkok Conference Slides. It is easy for me to be at the site after i understand what actually the company do.
  • After finished my work, i have some extra time to read the slide.

BANGKOK CONFERENCE SLIDE

There are 8 topics discussed in this slide which are:

  1. Utility's target - Zero Downtime
  2. Preventive Maintenance as the least -cost approach towards Zero Downtime.
  3. Condition Monitoring as an important input in Preventive Maintenance Program.
  4. The Role of Infrared Scanning in Condition Monitoring and the Speacial Capability of Thermoflir Infrared Camera.
  5. Case Study Demonstration effectiveness of its high technology in Condition Monitoring.
  6. Technology, Procedure and Responsibility.
  7. Actual Data.
  8. Complimentary System (Digital Ultrasonic Scanner).
  • For the extra time, I finished read the first 3 topics.

1.Utility's Target

As we all know, electricity is a basic necessity in our daily life. So, we know the main supplier of electricity in our country is Tenaga Nasional Berhad, TNB have to make sure consumer get this basic necessity in every hours.

  • Target - Zero Downtime: Continuous supply of electricity is paramount to highly critical installation. Thus, 'Zero Downtime' is primary target.

2.Preventive Maintenance

"Prevent is the better way before the Flash Over Occur"

  • Is the least-cost approach towards zero downtime.

3.Condition Maintenance

There are 3 types of condition maintenance which are:

i. Breakdown Maintenance, BM; is maintenance that is undertaken after a component fails.

ii. Scheduled Maintenance, SM; is where a ficility is taken offlne at fixed interval and scheduled maintenance is performed.

iii. Preventive Maintenance, PM; allows the early detection of potential equipment failure. This is also one of the maintenance that prefered by TNB due to least-cost approach.

Condition Monitoring System

  • Before the problem or accident happen (i.e Flash Over), the best way (least-cost approach) is to monitor the condition of the substation.
  • The condition of substation can be monitor using Infrared technology.
  • Infrared technology:

- Service provider could asses teh condition of the electrical power equipment under 'live condition'.

-This is very important as the infrared scanning operation wil not disrupt the present supply of electricity to the respective clients.

Day 8 (13th April 2010)

  • Download Infrared pictures, Photos and Ultrasonic graph from flirimage server for reports formatting.
  • I need to do report formatting for:

Client: TNB Distribution KL Pusat

Date of Inspection: 12th April 2010

No. of Reports: 8

  • Studied Bangkok Conference Slide

4.The Role of Infrared Scanning in Monitoring Condition and Speacial capability of thermoflir Infrared Camera.

The Basic Principle

  1. Each object has its own 'heat capability'.
  2. When the object is worm/hot, it produces radiation.
  3. The radiation can be quantified in term of frequency.
  4. The object is hotter ~ the higher the radiation~the higher the frequency intensity.
  5. This frequency - detected by infrared sensor and sends the data over the infrared system processor.
  6. The infrared system processor will subsequently process the data and projecting an infrared image on the screen.

1st Week of My Internship: FORMATTING

The first week of my industrial training i learned about how to do the report for FLIR ASIA customer or client. As i said before, the main customer of FLIR ASIA is TENAGA NASIONAL BERHAD. After the teams did the infrared and ultrasonic inspection to detect problems, they need to proceed by process the the infrared picture and ultrasound graph which are:

1. FORMATTING REPORT
2. ANALYSIS PROBLEMS
3. FINAL REPORT
The FLIR ASIA teams usually do the inspection at 3 main places:
1. Pencawang Elektrik,PE
2. Pencawang Masuk Utama, PMU
3. Pencawang Pembahagi Utama,PPU
In the report that i've done in the 1st week, all of it are the report regarding inspection of Pencawang Elektrik,PE. In the PE i can saw there are 3 main equipment which are LV Board, Transformer and Switchgear.

Pencawang Elektrik,PE

LV Board

Transformer (11kV~415V)
